In today’s fast-paced, constantly connected world, it’s easy to become so focused on daily demands that we overlook our spiritual needs. Just as skipping physical meals weakens our bodies, neglecting regular “meals” from God’s Word leaves us spiritually undernourished. Many believers unknowingly fall into what could be called “spiritual anorexia,” a state of starving our souls of the nourishment they need.
While we may not recognise it, our spirits crave God’s truth every day. When we miss out on that sustenance, we may start feeling empty, lost, or weak, and we might not understand why. Yet, Jesus made it clear when He said,
“Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4).
Just as we need food to live, we need God’s Word to truly thrive.
My Own Journey with the Bible
I used to struggle with reading the Bible. Growing up in a religious household, reading Scripture was a duty, something we did regularly, but it felt more like a ritual than a meaningful experience. Reading from an older translation, combined with a sense of obligation, left me feeling disconnected. I saw the Bible as a book of rules and regulations given by an angry God. I couldn’t see it as a source of encouragement or personal connection with the Father. It wasn’t until I came to truly know God as my loving Father that my view changed completely. Now, instead of feeling like a duty, Scripture has become a source of strength and a way to know God’s heart. This transformation made me realise the true importance of “spiritual food” and how essential it is to our growth and peace. It also put a passion in me to encourage to do the same.
Why Spiritual Food is Essential
For a healthy life, nutrition is non-negotiable, and it’s the same with spiritual health. Just as our physical bodies require food for strength, endurance, and healing, our spirits rely on God’s Word for guidance, wisdom, and peace. When we’re spiritually nourished, we’re better equipped to face life’s challenges, overcome temptation, and experience God’s peace.
Skipping out on this “spiritual food” doesn’t just leave us feeling empty—it weakens our ability to stand strong in faith. Like missing meals, it gradually takes a toll. We may find ourselves feeling disconnected from God, discouraged, or even overwhelmed by life’s trials. These feelings are often symptoms of a deeper need for God’s presence through His Word.
In today’s world, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle, treating Bible reading as an optional extra rather than a daily necessity. But think about how you’d feel if you skipped meals regularly; eventually, you’d feel drained and exhausted. The same is true for our spiritual lives.
God has given us His Word as a life-giving source of nourishment and strength, but we must take the time to feed on it regularly.
Jesus’ Teaching on Spiritual Nourishment
In Matthew 4:4, Jesus reminds us that true life isn’t just about physical sustenance. Jesus knew that God’s words are as vital as food, offering us more than information—they offer life itself. Imagine how essential the Word must be if Jesus, in the wilderness and faced with temptation, chose Scripture as His source of strength and truth. It’s an example for us all, showing that Scripture isn’t merely “spiritual advice”—it’s the sustenance we need to live out our faith with strength and resilience.
Tips for Incorporating Daily Bible Reading
Building a habit of regular Bible reading can seem challenging, but even small steps can make a significant impact on our spiritual health. Here are some ways to start feeding on the Word daily:
Set a Time: Choose a time each day, whether morning, lunch break, or before bed, to spend in the Bible. Even five to ten minutes can make a difference.
Start with the Gospels or Psalms: These books offer both the teachings of Jesus and prayers for strength, peace, and encouragement.
Use a Bible App: If you’re on the go, try using a Bible app to access Scripture. Many apps have reading plans and daily reminders to help keep you consistent. They can also audibly read the Bible to you if you struggle visually.
Memorise a Verse: Start with a verse that speaks to you and carry it in your heart throughout the day. It can be a reminder of God’s truth in moments when you need it most.
Journal Your Reflections: Writing down what you read and how it impacts you helps internalise God’s Word and makes it easier to reflect on later.
Seeing the Bible as Essential to Life
At SwordTruth, we believe that standing firm in faith requires us to be regularly nourished by God’s Word. The Bible isn’t just another book or a “Sunday resource”—it’s our daily bread, a lifeline in a world that often pulls us in countless directions. When we prioritise feeding our spirits with the Bible, we align our lives with God’s truth and find strength that no worldly substitute can provide. Our prayer is that our clothing acts as a reminder for Christian living everyday. Check out our shop if you haven't already.
Also, if you’ve been feeling spiritually drained, consider how regularly feeding on God’s Word might renew your strength. Don’t let the demands of daily life keep you from this source of life and truth. Instead, see the Bible as your spiritual nourishment, a source of strength as vital as physical food. With each encounter, you’re not only learning about God; you’re growing closer to Him, finding fresh strength and guidance for every day.
Reflection: Take a moment today to consider how you can build a regular rhythm of Bible reading into your life. Begin with a simple prayer, asking God to give you a deeper hunger for His Word and the strength to make it a daily habit.
Interesting we eat everyday or snack a lot but yet struggle to do this with God's word. We would be malnourished if we do not eat. So the same would be the same of not reading God's word.
